9th Street Deli

Located at the corner of 9th and Philadelphia Streets is one of most popular restaurants in Indiana. 9th Street Deli caters to a diverse crowd that includes businessmen, students and families. The restaurant has a small dining area inside and also has two tables outside during nice weather. "The outside tables are a perfect place to eat and relax on a nice day", said Junior Nursing major Steven Pozik.

9th Street Deli offers soup, sandwiches, salads, and their famous 2 foot subs. these huge subs have become the restaurants most popular item and the reason why they have such a large clientele. My favorite sub from 9th Street has to be the steak and cheese but everyone has their own favorite. What's your favorite 9th Street Deli sub?

Chappy's Place

Like most college students, I admit to not having the healthiest diet. Between work and school, I just don't have the time to cook myself a meal every day. I usually have to settle for fast food but that can grow boring very quickly. "It seems like there are only fast food places in Indiana," said Junior Communications major Ryan Bernat. "There's nowhere in town to get a good home cooked meal." I agreed with this statement until I was recently introduced to Chappy's Place along West Pike Road. The restaurant is located about five minutes outside of Indiana and seems to be a very well kept secret. The majority of the restaurants patrons seem to be older but that just may be because I visited on a Sunday afternoon. Chappy's serves everything from spaghetti to salads and have really large portions. I ordered a crispy chicken salad and was warmly greeted by the waiter. My food arrived quickly and most importantly of all, it was delicious. Has anyone ever been to Chappy's and if so, how did you like it?

Bootleggers Bar & Grill

Located only 20 minutes outside of Indiana is Bootleggers Bar & Grill and some of the best wings you'll ever eat. The resturarant was opened in 2003 by the Barris brothers; Don, Mark, Art and John. It features a sports themed bar and plenty of televisions to watch your favorite teams. On Thursdays, the bar offers a 25 cent wing special that draws quite a crowd. The bars wing sauce has grown so popular that they have even started bottling it to sell at local stores. My favorite sauce is their Johnny's Sauce, a sort of hot-bbq sauce but everyone has their favorite. " I love their Mango Habenero wings," said sophmore Communications major Garrett Sisak. " Plus their prices are cheap and the atmosphere is great."

If you're tired of eating the same boring sandwiches, head down to Samiches to get a real taste of Pittsburgh. Steel CIty Samiches is located on North 7th Street and has gained a reputation as an afterhour spot for the late night crowd. Samiches specialty is their "Pittsburgh-style" sandwiches that include cole slaw and fresh cut fries. They also serve salads, burgers, subs, and many other great foods. "I love their samiches because they are so much different than anything else in town," said sophomore Safety Science major Caleb Rorabaugh.samiches.jpg

College Lodge

Now that Spring is upon us, it's time to dust off your old Frisbee and head over to the College Lodge. College Lodge is a 18 hole disc golf course started in 2001 and is located at the IUP Recreation Park on College Lodge Road. The course opens on April 2nd and is open to all members of the public. The course offers beautiful scenery and a great playing atmosphere for beginners and experts alike.
I regularly play disc golf at College Lodge and I am always suprised by the great upkeep of the course. Its fairways are always recently mowed and even wooded holes are well maintained. My favorite hole has to be the 18th, which is over 700 feet long and straight down a former sled riding hill. Whether you've been disc golfing before or not, the College Lodge provides a great place to have fun and get some sun!

Growing up only ten minutes from IUP's campus, I have had years to find the best places in town to enjoy. My blog will highlight these "townie" spots for current and incoming students at IUP. I plan to write about the best restaurants, entertainment and nightlife spots from Indiana and its surrounding areas.Hopefully, this blog will help you find some places to enjoy other than the "typical" spots on Philly Street!
