Many college students visit various other schools during their college years, mostly because their friends attend them. My favorite part about going to other schools is getting to eat at their dining facility, one reason being I don't have to waste a guest swipe on my friend and I love seeing what type of food other schools have and how it's set up.

Since my freshman year in 2008 I've had many friends come visit me at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and we would also go to Foster's Dining Hall because I didn't have to waste FLEX and we had a larger selection.

"Your cafe has more selection, which is much needed since your food sucks," said Amber L. Deardorff a senior at East Stroudsburg University.

Deardorff visited IUP in October of 2011.

I'd like to agree with her comment because it's true IUP's food really isn't all that great, obviously everyone has their own opinion and I am more than open to to taking others thoughts about our food.

But it isn't always about the food that puts a bad memory in visitors minds, some have bad experiences.

On Wednesday April 18, 2012 I went to the cafe with a friend who was up for the day visiting the school after being accepted to the Fall 2012 semester.

We were standing in line waiting for order our omelets and it literally took 10 minutes to even be noticed. We stood there aimlessly waiting for one of the two women be hide the counter to even acknowledge our presence.

They were talking and gossiping about how they get treated badly at work and no one really cares about that, which says one thing about Aramark and how they are obviously not treating their employees that great.

Once we ordered our eggs after being ignored for 10 minutes the lady was mentioning to us that their was someone sick and he was in the break room and that management did not want to do anything about it.

"I thought it was rude and unprofessional to be gossiping right in front of students who came to eat not listen to people complain about their jobs," said Brendan R.W Davis a previous Bloomsburg University student.

I noticed the other day while eating at the cafe that they put posters up announcing what type of food is coming next throughout the week. One poster that caught my eye was sushi Thursday.

I thought this was interesting because sushi to me has a unique taste and I didn't realize how many people actually enjoy the taste of fish in there mouth.

I was forced to try sushi a couple times in my life and never really liked it until recently.

That is of course before I tried the cafe's sushi. I am now not willing to put sushi into my mouth ever again. I know that cafe makes some people sick after eating there but holy cow, I think I was sick for a week straight after that.

After eating the sushi I realized something, it was FRIDAY!

Sushi is Thursday, which means I ate leftover sushi...

Photo taken by Aysa Alwood

When I realized the sushi was a day old I first got sick to my stomach then I walked home and started researching how long can sushi be kept out. It was actually really hard to find a website that confirmed a actual time, so I took in answers from others off of a website where you post questions to receive answers.

Most of the answers were steering towards 24 hours but no later. Since I do not know when the sushi was actually made I can't time it correctly but the sushi was for dinner Thursday and I ate it around four o'clock Friday so I'd say I was right around the 24 hour deadline if not passed.

Maybe the Cafe should have looked up how to keep sushi fresh over night in order to prevent my sickness. It only took me about 10 minutes to find out facts about sushi, the cafe could have saved me a couple hours of being trapped in the downward dog position on my bed if they would have properly prepared and stored the sushi.

I usually don't like eating on campus because I obviously have an issue with their food but today I had a hankering for a honey mustard chicken wrap. I went into the HUB and ordered myself a wheat wrap with chicken, lettuce, onion, banana pepper and of course honey mustard. Once the wrap was handed to me I was actually surprised with how well it was wrapped and the presentation that is until I saw it up close and actually bit into it.
Not that I was surprised by the lack of meat on my chicken wrap since I do not expect much from them anymore, but holy cow was there a lot of lettuce!

I had to scrap almost all the lettuce off to even taste the chicken on my wrap.
In an article focusing on stopping food waste it states that 50 percent of the lettuce we buy ends up in the bin. So maybe IUP should stop stuffing our sandwiches and wraps with lettuces just to make them look larger. Besides who wants to bit into a wrap and have a mouth full of lettuce.

This photo was taken after scooping off half of my lettuce and yet there is still a lot of lettuce.

In the STOP food waste article they also mention growing your own lettuce, now of course IUP couldn't grow its own lettuce for the whole school but maybe they could grow a few vegetables to help counter act the vegetables we are receiving from Aramark. Besides it's healthier to eat fresh lettuce than preserved.

"I think it would be an awesome idea for IUP to start a garden," said Kayley B. Sleighter a hospitality management major. "It would save money and even make a new club for IUP, the gardening club!"

How would you a student of IUP feel if the university started growing their own vegetables at least for students that would rather have fresh lettuce than preserved?

Students at Indiana University of Pennsylvania have the option to choose whole wheat, white, rye and other types of breads for their sandwiches. IUP also offers different types of wraps they have the option of a glutton free wrap, spinach wrap and a few others. But one thing that I have not taken notice too until recently is the choice of having whole wheat noodles. Along with not having the choice to have whole wheat bread with fixed meals at Fosters, IUP's cafeteria, fixed meals being cheese steak sandwiches, gyros, chicken quesadillas, along with a variety of soups. We also do not have the choice to have wheat crackers or croutons.

Chicken noodle soup served at Fosters without having the choice of whole wheat noodles.

"Personally I only eat whole wheat bread," said Jera M. Scott, a athletic training major at IUP. "I'd appreciate it if IUP would switch everything to whole wheat."

If IUP would switch to whole grain at least for noodles in the soup they serve along with the pasta they would be helping students become healthier, WHFoods.com stated, that Whole grains are a rich source of magnesium, a mineral that acts as a co-factor for more than 300 enzymes, including enzymes involved in the body's use of glucose and insulin secretion. By switching to whole wheat it will substantially help lower type 2 diabetes.

"A diet rich in whole grains may also help steer you around cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, even gum disease--not to mention the pain of having to buy bigger pants," stated by Dr. Oz and Dr. Micheal Roizen in the article, Behold the Health Benefits of Whole Wheat Bread.

If we could convince IUP and Aramark to switch our pasta noodle to whole wheat along with giving students the option to choose what type of bread they'd like with their cheese steak or chicken quesadilla we could move towards a better lifestyle for the whole campus.

Take time to post your comments on my blog along with IUP's dining Facebook because that's the only way we will see a difference in the nutritional value we are served here at IUP.

Quiznos is usually the place I go for my health kick because I adore the Honey Mustard Chicken Salad...

My salad included chicken, onion, cheese, tomatoes, banana peppers and of course lettuce. The only problem with my salad was the fact that I had to pull half my lettuce out because it was soggy and disgusting.

My friend, Natalie C. Mumaw also a IUP student, had a Quiznos. She was pickier with her lettuce and basically had a chicken veggie bowl, lite on the lettuce.

"Around 40% of my Quiznos salad was inedible due to wilted and scummy lettuce," said Mumaw.

This is half of Mumaw's salad..

Since I ate lettuce I figured I'd research why it's healthy for me, finding that it is actually the veggie of the month! It gives a 70% of Vitamin A which is essential just like all of the other vitamins we need in order to have a healthy lifestyle. Knowing I didn't get to enjoy my whole salad I wasn't only left hungry but I was also short on my Vitamin A!

Obviously it was a fault on the Quiznos location at Folger's in IUP but there should never be a time when a restaurant serves their paying customers soggy lettuce, I wasted my flex on half a salad that did not satisfy myself or Mumaw.

If you have any disappointing stories about our dining facilities please feel free to comment...

On December 15, 2011 the Council of Trustees at IUP approved the $37-million Campus Dining Master Plan. The debt that IUP will be encountering due to this master plan will be paid by through dining revenues.

The Master Plan includes construction of two new dining facilities, a food court and the North Dining Commons. This Master Plan will also renovate Folger Dining Hall along with retiring Foster Dining Hall.

Photo taken from the IUP.eduThe North Dining Commons will be replacing Keith Hall, providing 450 seats for students along with an "all you care to eat" format. 450 seats to me do not sound like that many when we have over 16,000 students that attend IUP.

Since Keith Hall is being demolition for our new dining facility they will be relocated it in between Clark Hall and Sutton Hall along Grant Street. The only place that I can think of where a new building would fit is that gorgeous patch of grassy area where I see students playing Frisbee, football and throwing the baseball on warm, sunny days. So once again IUP is taking away more of our relaxation area, soon this school will probably be all buildings and nowhere to relax.

Future students are also so lucky to find out that IUP has resigned a 5-year contract with Aramark!

Drew P. Deller, a business major and student at IUP, thought he'd try out the new slushies' before purchasing one. After doing so he realized taste testing was unacceptable and not allowed in front of the workers at the HUB.

Drew said after throwing away the cup he used to taste his slushy in that a Aramark worker at the HUB came up to him saying, *"You shouldn't have thrown that cup away since I am still going to charge you for it." *Drew made it clear to me that it was only a sip out of the slushy machine, meaning he would have wasted flex on a sip.

So instead of being charged for a sip that he did not like anyways he filled up a cup and paid for the whole slushy. A waste of his flex, for sure, since he threw away the slushy after he walked out of the HUB.

Why aren't we allowed to taste things before we buy them, it is our money that we are spending! Especially since the slushy machine is new this year they should have small cups out for us students to taste which slushy we like more, if any, before wasting our flex money.

If anyone else has stories like this where the HUB, Folgers or the cafe has just pissed you off please comment and share your story!
