Reader's theater response

I really enjoyed talking about reader's theater and participating in it today.  I can see many advantages to using reader's theater in the classroom.  For Social Studies, using a historical fiction book and have children read different character parts will not only enable them to have fun, they will also remember the subject matter more.

This correlates with what we are learning in art integration. By immersing the students in the information, they can FEEL the concept and actually live the past. When history comes alive, it becomes real and so much more interesting.

I love reader's theater! It is such a great way to get the children excited about a subject that when simply seen in a textbook.. could appear boring. While working with 1st grade, reader's theater would obviously need to be dialed down, but it is something that all grade levels would enjoy. There are so many elements within the performance that would benefit their school experience, as well. Attentive listening, expression, connecting with characters, interacting with peers... and the list goes on.

I would really like to use one with the 1st graders that incorporates sounds being signaled by certain words in the text (like we did earlier). They could definitely handle this!
