In today's class, I enjoyed viewing the books everyone shared with the class. In our first grade classroom, students have been learning sequencing. The books, If You Give a Pig a Party and If You Give a Moose a Muffin were excellent narrative stories to read aloud with the students. After reading the story, I could ask them to sequence the events of the story: beginning, middle, and end. Another strategy that I liked from our chapter readings was sketch to stretch. Many of the first grade students draw during bus time and recess. This activity could be used after reading the students a book or correlating with their language arts lesson for the day. The final motive for writing that we learned about today was author studies. Several of our books in the curriculum include information about the author and illustrator. The library is a great resource for finding books about the author and other books written by the author. This will also assist the student in learning how to find books independently.
I really liked sketch to strech idea in our Language Arts books. I was very happy to learn more about the concept today in class. Currently the sixth grade classroom I am student teaching in is reading Al Capone Does My Shirts and I plan on using sketch to strectch. I am going to use sketch to strecth in the next to last chapter when Moose writes a letter to Al Capone to help his sister Natalie. The students will use sketch to stretch to tell what they will think will happen at the end of the book. Students will proofread one anothers papers and share with their literature group.
I really enjoyed talking about reader's theater and participating in it today. I can see many advantages to using reader's theater in the classroom. For Social Studies, using a historical fiction book and have children read different character parts will not only enable them to have fun, they will also remember the subject matter more.
All this preparation.....looking forward to teaching my own class!! Lots of good information...I think we will all be more than ready when the time comes!
I really enjoyed the Reader's Theatre today! I have not used this approach in reading, an I am very excited to do so! If anyone has any ideas on stories that are already formatted in script form for 5th grade readers I would LOVE some ideas! Thanks...
